One of the elements I love most about my neighborhood is its natural grittiness. To the south I have one of the best parks in town, old Victorian mansions which have been turned into apartments and a slew of great neighborhood restaurants and bars. One block north is comprised of one of the major thoroughfares of the city and the most recognized street names in town. The street is an interesting cross section of street people, gentrification and everything in between.
I have always felt safe in my hood but this summer the block has been kind of sketchy. The church across the street from my place is only open on Saturdays (random I know) and they allow the homeless to sleep all over their property. There has always been homeless presence but this summer’s homeless crowd is different in that they seem increasingly more belligerent and violent. To add fuel to the fire the corner bar has made it a policy of serving those that other bars refuse. A great way to make money but there is always a reason others are not serving these individuals. These two elements have made the area around my place feel a bit unsettled.
I am making it my mission to clean-up the neighborhood.
